Welcome to the Jungle, David de Gea.

He shares his birthday with Madame Curie and Joni Mitchell, so he must come good eventually, but it’s not all been bad. In this piece I take a brief look at David de Gea, and how he has settled in the jungle that is the Premier League.

David de Gea has the [mis] fortune of being Man Utd’s most expensive goalkeeper, and the most expensive in the Premier League by some distance. He cost a not inconsequential £18m or so. This, as well as Utd being amongst the biggest clubs in world football, has put great pressures and expectations on a man that is not even 22 yet.

Look at the facial hair!

Under most other circumstances an allowance would be made when one moves to a new country, one which brings with it an entirely new culture, weather, lifestyle, and that’s without mentioning the language. But with De Gea every mistake has been pounced on, by both fans and the media. Opposition fans are quick to laugh at the fee when he does make a mistake, perhaps thinking he has to repay his fee within 12 months or Fergie will cut off his balls. The media are the media, it is what they do – they’ll do whatever it takes to get hits or sell papers. They will jump on mistakes more readily than mention saves, even ones that occurred in the same match!

So, how has De Gea settled in the jungle that is the Premier League? Rather well, actually. Yes, he has shown himself to be imperfect, but who is perfect? Can he improve? Of course he can, and he will. He is weak in aerial challenging situations, but he wouldn’t have much experience given the differences between La Liga and the Premier League. Coaches will be working on this with him. Communication is a concern, but I don’t think he has a BA in English so it was always going to be a concern in his first year. It is generally taken his species, the goalkeeper, don’t peak until their mid-late twenties, and he has some of the best coaches available at Utd, he will be taught well and given game time too. He has shown glimpses of the massive potential that saw Fergie splash out to bring him to Old Trafford. He has made some absolutely stupendous saves, especially in the recent Chelsea game.

One other thing he can improve upon is that facial hair. Just get rid of it. Please, David, if you’re reading this, just get rid of it.

Favourite Utd XI.

This is my favourite Utd XI, from players that I have actually seen – it is not an all-time XI, as to even attempt that would prove futile. I have not seen enough of Best/Law/Charlton etc to be able to judge things properly. Also, the game has changed since their respective times in the red of Utd. Anyways, here it is, my XI with brief reasons why…..

Edwin van der Sar in goal. For me he just edges Schmeichel, mainly due to the fact he’s helped Utd reach three European finals. Also, he was in goal for that record run up to January 09, going 1032 minutes with conceding a goal.

G. Neville at right back. In his pomp he was the best right back in the Premiership. Perhaps he should’ve retired earlier, but he’s still a legend. A great pundit in the making now.

Stam as one of the centre backs. Even Fergie regrets letting him go so soon. He was imposing, brilliant in the challenge and gave his all. If only he chose not to write that book…. I truly believe losing him cost us on the European stage for the next few years.

Vidic is the other centre back. He has been brilliant since joining Utd, with the odd exception – mostly when up against Torres. Committed and can pop up with the odd goal. I hope he stays at Utd for many more years.

Irwin at left back. Not only is he brilliant there, but his set-pieces are brilliant. Yes he’s right footed at left back, but he wasn’t one to let players get past him on his ‘weak’ side.

Right wing/midfield is very tough, but I choose Beckham. Just. His crossing, vision and passing were just that tad bit better than Ronaldo. The latter works better in a 4-3-3 anyway…. Beckham assisted so many goals, and scored quite a few too.

Keane and Scholes in the centre of midfield. Simply the best midfield Utd have had since I started watching football over 20 years ago now. They just knew each other so well – one would stay and the other would go. Scholes wasn’t brilliant at tackling, but Keane was, whilst Keane wasn’t the best goalscorer but Scholes popped up with a fair few goals.

Left midfield is the easiest choice. It HAS to be Giggs. Legendary. That goal against Arsenal in 99 is one of the best of all time. All time appearance record holder.

Now onto attack. Utd have had so many great strikers in the last 20 years – Cole, Yorke, Solskjaer, Sheringham, Cantona, Hughes, Van Nistelrooy, Rooney….. my strikers are Cantona and Cole. The former had it all, creativity, controversy and leadership, whilst the latter just scored goals for fun and was a key element in the treble winning team.

This is in no way definitive, as there is some bias. But it was never going to be as favourite XIs are biased by their very nature.
