Messi v Ronaldo: Why?

Lionel Messi is a phenomenal player, one of the best currently playing the beautiful game. Cristiano Ronaldo is also a phenomenal player, who is also one of the best playing football.

Now, I could reel off some stats here, but stats in and of themselves are utterly meaningless. Football is an emotional game, with stats being the antithesis of it’s very being. People, fans to be precise, use stats only two ways – either to beat a player or laud a player. They do the same with teams, but here I am discussing individuals so that is of no value here.

The thing I really don’t get is the constant debate, be it in pubs/bars across the globe or on the interwebz, regarding who is the best player currently playing the game. Why can’t people just sit back and appreciate these two players? Constant sniping about refs, penalties, who plays with better players etc etc. Yet, for me, we should just sit back, mouths agape in wonderment, and take in every moment that these two players offer up for us to enjoy. Every single time this debate arises I think of this picture:

Both players have already broken numerous records, and will most likely rewrite the record books again over the next few years. So, let us all just sit back and enjoy what they offer, and that is football at its very best.
